Our iPhones are put through a series of daily environmental stress tests that according to SquareTrade Inc result in over a quarter (28% to be exact) of iPhones becoming damaged beyond repair in their first 2 years of ownership.
Whilst the iPhone (and now the iPad) may have revolutionized the way we communicate with eachother the phone is still a physical object that if not properly looked after or protected will become damaged. For some unfortunate owners (see the iPhone 4 to the left) the damage makes the phone unusable.
So, what can you do to protect your iPhone?
There are three products that you need to consider purchasing if you want to give your iPhone the best chance of surviving beyond 2 years.
First, is the protective case. Mobile phone cases these days are not just about protecting your phone, they also make a statement about who you are as well! Brightly colored cases, cases that look like a truck tire and cases that have your own unique artwork on them are all the rage right now. But these great looking cases all do a good job of saving your iPhone from that accidental drop.
Second is the screen protector which is designed to protect your iPhone from sharp objects (such as the coins and keys in your pocket or purse) from scratching the glass screen of your phone (remember that the iPhone 4 has glass on both the front and back which needs protecting).
The final thing that you can do is take out insurance to protect your phone against accidental damage. For a small outlay you can rest assured that should your iPhone become damaged beyond repair that it will be replaced.
All of the above measures will help to ensure that you and your iPhone are the best of buddies for more than two years!
This video by the guys at ifixyouri shows them dropping an iPhone 4 three times onto the concrete to test the protection offered by the bumper case. Not surprisingly on the third drop the iPhone loses its screen.
What does this prove? It proves that your iPhone 4, like most high-tech gadgets, doesn’t like to be dropped onto concrete!
Seriously, please don’t think that just because you have dressed your iPhone in a case that you can go around dropping it whenever you feel like it and expect it to continue working!
Here’s our guidance:
Get a decent case for your iPhone. Yes, we just said that you shouldn’t dress your iPhone and then expect it to be bullet proof when you keep dropping it. However, the chances are that the iPhone 4 in this video would have lost its screen on the first drop. The case bought them a couple more drops.
If you do drop your phone and it survives then you might want to consider getting a new case for it. Much like a motorbike helmet the structural integrity of the case may have been weakened as a result of the drop.
Unless you want to walk around with your iPhone wrapped in cotton wool (now, there’s a thought for a case!) or chained to your wrist, then look after it and treat it like the relatively fragile object that it is.

Whilst PC World may have conducted their ‘scratch and drop’ test to see how well the iPhone can handle the abuse, we wouldn’t recommend that you keep your iPhone naked. They spent just a few minutes ‘testing’ their phone – yours needs to stand up to the every day rough and tumble associated with modern life.
